I believe its situational. If you can prove (by keeping service receipts from outside garages) that you have done regular oil changes, then should anything happen engine wise, you have a better chance for warranty coverage than if you had no proof. Obviously having a VW service history is the best proof, but for some people who might live on the opposite side of the island, a 1000km drive for a oil change is just not possible. It's when you get into other things like transmission fluid flushes, brake fluid flushes, diesel particulate filter services, etc that would cause grief down the road should you choose to ignore it. The VW recommended services are there to protect both your vehicle and the owner should a large warranty claim come into play.
As for price, just call up the service dept and axe em real quick.
