FAQ’s:
What is involved, and how long does it take?
Tuning, or remapping a car is a three-step process. First, the installer uses VCDS to scan the car for existing malfunction indicator lights (MIL codes), record engine and transmission coding, and confirm that the car is suitable to be tuned. Second, the tuning company’s proprietary hardware is connected to the vehicle, the appropriate options are selected based on the vehicle configuration, and the tune is flashed to the vehicle ECU. The third step is to reconnect VCDS to clear codes that were caused by the flashing process.
The exact time from start to finish varies by vehicle, but typically ranges from 15 to 45 minutes. There will be two people working at The Dub Show to help move things along more quickly; one person with VCDS and the other installing the tunes.
How can I pay, and how much do they cost?
Each brand has its own product pricing scheme, and website prices must be carefully noted as to which currency they are advertised in. For pricing, please contact Andrew at your convenience. Payment can be made through credit card, cash, or email money transfer at the time of the tune.
Will there be a Dub Show price?
This is being looked into, and while a specific number cannot be announced at this time it is the hope that we will be able to offer a price for the show.
What if there are not enough appointments at the show?
Depending on the number of interested people there may not be enough time in a single day to tune everyone. With the show being on a Sunday, arrangements will be made to provide tuning services on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at a yet-to-be named location.
Is my warranty affected?
Yes and no.
When driving a VW or Audi it is important to be aware of the limitations of the warranty, and how it can be affected by modifications made to the vehicle. Any change to a vehicle is always made under the assumption that the owner accepts the risks of making those changes. A car that has certain hardware or software (tune) modifications can be identified by the VW and Audi through an automated process during a service appointment. When the vehicle is connected to the service equipment, a check is done against the main server in Germany to determine if the car has been software modified. If this check returns a positive, the car is flagged with a TD1. Hardware changes may be noted by the dealer and a manual TD1 flag applied to your vehicle. This may or may not affect your warranty; it depends on the dealer and repair you are looking for. It is unclear at this time if a TD1 is reversible, so it is best to avoid the situation at all costs.
With APR and United Motorsports tuning, this can be avoided by making an appointment with Andrew to return your car to OEM stock tuning prior to a service appointment. Please note that this is not the same as putting the car in stock mode on an ECU that has more than one program loaded on to it; that is still a modified ECU that will be flagged.
If you have your car tuned, and plan on trading it in, a tune will affect the ability for the dealer to apply the Certified Pre-Owned label, which will affect trade-in and resale value. Be sure to book an appointment to have the car returned to OEM stock tuning before this as well.
When looking into modifying your car, it is always recommended to research and ask as many questions as possible to ensure you are informed and comfortable with those modifications and how they may impact your warranty. Overall, returning a vehicle to OEM stock tuning has been a successful way to maintain a vehicle’s warranty while having lots of fun between service appointments!
Is there a warranty on the tune?
This depends on the brand; for example APR offers a 30 day no questions asked money-back guarantee. It is recommended to review the end-user license agreement (EULA) for the company you are thinking about purchasing from.
