Thanks Chris. Here are a few more. We left Moab travelling west again on our way to San Francisco. The Moab is in the bottom east corner of Utah so this meant we had a long trip back across Utah, Nevada and California. It's littered with high mountains and wide desert valleys. We took US 50 as our route thru Utah and Nevada. Utah is pretty flat, not much to see, it's high desert, basically a wasteland. In Nevada US 50 climbs thru 17 mountain passes with very long straight roads across the valleys between the mountains. It took us three days to get across to Carson City which is where we are now. US 50 is termed the loneliest highway in america, it's also the route the pony express took in 1860. here are a few pictures.

Valley run, some of these straight roads were 25 or more miles.

We stopped for lunch at one of the pull overs for chain removal. Yeah they have signs posted and areas designated for installing wheel chains to get over the mountains. Anyway, zoom in close at the mountain face just behind the bus. You should be able to see 8 Mule deer grazing and watching us closely.

Image
About half way across US 50 we went thru Austin NV. This town grew from the gold and silver mining in the late 1800. It had over 10,000 people in 1897 today 115 people call it home. It has become a living ghost town. This castle was built by the rail and mine owner to live in while visiting the town. It was only occupied for 2 months, built in 1897.

Image
This was a sand dune outside of Fallon NV. It was super windy with lots of blowing sand when we drove thru. The picture doesn't show the size, it's 600 feet high and 2 miles long.

We stopped at a interesting petroglyphs site. Nevada has the oldest known petroglyphs on the continent. They estimate these rocks are 8000 years ago. Cool!

Cool Steve. I bet you wished you had the MG to rip through those mountain roads or cruise open top on those long straights! Next time!

while we were in Mexico Mary asked if I could create a picture of the bus so she could cross stitch the pattern. So I found a picture on line and proceeded to modify it in paint to give her the pixel definition for cross stitching. here is the final outcome

After driving the lonely highway we made it to Reno Nevada, Reno has a great car collection (Harrods collection) that we had to see. Most of the cars were pre 1940 so there were some really old one off cars from the birth of the auto industry. I can tell you the car has come a long way in a hundred years. Interesting cars included auburn, Cord, Mercer, Duzie. All together over 200 cars. There were a couple of VW's, a beetle Cabrio, and a split window oval beetle dated 1949.

We headed over the Sierra Nevada Mountings rising to 7500 feet. At the top is Lake Tahoe. It was cold, they ski here into June at the really high elevations. The water in the Lake is crystal clear.

Leaving there we traveled the interstate towards San Francisco. This forced us to drive across the bay bridge which allowed for great views of SF. We did airBnB in Pacifica and used the local transit to get around SF. We did all the sites, cable car, market av., fisherman's wharf, Golden Gate and Alcatraz.

From SF we started our north travel thru Muir Woods and on to the Cali North coast. Today is our third day from SF and we just got thru the redwood avenue of giants. This is such a cool place! To stand under 350 feet trees that are 21 feet in diameter and think they were just seedlings at 100 AD. Some of the trees date 2400 years. It's a little humbling and makes you think how short ones life is in comparison.

In the woods decaying, probably take 2 or 3 hundred years to decompose.

More to come as we venture into Oregon.

Awesome! Keep an eye out for Chips aka David Courtney and a few other ex-pat NL'ers cruising the coast from Van to Cali on Super Moto bikes!

It's been a while since I posted the trip updates. I'm getting slack the closer we get to Newfoundland. Since the last post we traveled across Canada to Ottawa. Visited lots of friends along the way. We attended the Bus Fusion gathering, had a blast. Last week we entered the US again to drive thru New England. Spent a week driving around Vermont. I found by accident a guy that had dozens of old vanagons, beetles, and thousands of new and old parts. I got a few things for the pickup and Cabby.
We went to a cruise in at Hemmings Motors News head office in Bemmington Vermont. WE actually won an award for Driveable Dream. We decided to head to Bethel New York the site of the 69 Woodstock Festival. Really cool museum and arts center. We are leaving to go back thru New Hampshire and Maine tomorrow. Hope you enjoy the pics.
